Tenerife GuideThe largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is a popular tourist destination. Over 10 million tourists a year come to see the rugged landscape, beautiful beaches and amazing scenery. Tenerife is sometimes referred to as the “Land of Eternal Spring”. This is due to the very moderate climate the island experiences in both winter and summer, with very little fluctuation in temperatures. Tenerife has some of the most striking black sand beaches in the world. In Puerto de la Cruz, which is Tenerife’s second largest city, there is a series of seawater pools designed by native artist Cesar Manrique which are definitely worth visiting. Throughout the island, you will find many different options for beach going, including several nude beaches. One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Tenerife is by hiking some of the amazing landscape. There are dozens of well marked trails which range in difficulty from simple strolls to challenging climbs up some of the higher peaks. While in Tenerife, make sure to sample some of the local cuisine. Tenerife provides a wealth of culinary delights and local dishes often include fresh fish, baby goat, and fried pork with chick peas. In addition, there are many varieties of locally grown wine to choose from. Many of the local vineyards grow their grapes in the hollows left by ancient volcanoes. The rich volcanic soil is excellent for all types of produce and grapes are no exception. Tenerife has long been known for an active nightlife, and there is no shortage of clubs, bars and casinos to visit. If you happen to be visiting around February, you may be fortunate enough to experience Carnival. The festivals and parades which take place during Carnival are said to rival even Rio De Janeiro. It’s a week long spectacle of parades, dance and elaborate costumes. There are also plenty of family oriented activities, including many which feature flamenco or Spanish dancing. Whether you are looking for a active vacation spent climbing through volcanic rocks or a luxurious trip full of sun filled beaches and glasses of local sangria, Tenerife is a destination that should not be missed!
